blog 1.2 "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks".
The main idea for 10th grade English is morality and ethics and what a better way to start the year than with the book "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks". The book is about ethical issues of race and class in medical research. The story is centered around Henrietta Lacks who was a black woman whose cancer cells became the first immortalized cell line. The problem with this is that her cells were taken without her consent or knowledge and her family never made a single penny off the multi-billion cell industry that launched from her cells. This sparked controversy as people were debating as to whether or not it was ethical to do this without the person's consent. The book also talked about other instances of unethical practices such as the time a doctor injected cancer cells into patients without telling them. He lied to them saying that he was only testing to see if they had cancer.
